Baxster Crown removed his cigarette pack from his shirt pocket. Logan watched him casually blow three perfect smoke rings. “Turned on yet?” Baxster asked, his brows raised.

Logan asked, “Sexual training?”

“Oh, yes,” Baxster said.

Logan shook his head.

“So,” Baxster said, “how about I tell you the rest of the story while we’re having sex?”

“No, thank you,” Logan told him. “I just don’t roll that way, Baxster.”

Baxster placed a hand on top of Logan’s.

“I’ll pass,” Logan said, prying Baxster’s hand off.

Logan ended up dropping Baxster off at a rather expensive house in the Northwoods district of east Omaha. He claimed it was owned by his new friend, the one who had replaced Frankie. He told Logan that he still loved Frankie.

“Sure didn’t consider me a harasser when I was giving Frankie bed service. Now they claim I am a nuisance.”

Logan studied the three-story house with its well-manicured lawn. “You didn’t blackmail Franklin, demanding he pay you hush money to keep you quiet about his former relationship with you?”

“Oh, that?” Baxster chuckled. “That was just to get Frankie’s attention. He hurt me by wanting nothing more to do with me. Hell, I would have stayed with Frankie the rest of my days. I loved him that much.”

“So,” Logan said, “you were genuinely attached to Frankie? You do realize there was a big age gap between you two, right?

“Age shouldn’t restrict love,” Baxster said. “If you really love someone, why should age even be considered a factor? That’s a fucked-up law, that because an older man like Frankie loved me, he could spend the rest of his days in prison.”

“Those laws,” Logan argued, “are in place to protect kids like you from predators who—”

“Frankie isn’t a predator,” Baxster contended. “You condemn him for showing me love when no one else ever did in my fucked-up, rotten life? Do you know how dark it is in my world? Do you know what being loved by Frankie, an older man, did for me? It changed my life.”

“Changed your life and led you to what?”

Baxster studied him. “Frankie didn’t burn me, if that’s what you mean.”

“You claimed he did,” Logan said. “Rumor has it that he infected you and began paying for your treatments with money from his nonprofit corporation. You deny this?”

“Frankie did not infect me,” Baxster said. “I just said that to get—”

“Frankie’s attention.”

The kid looked sad. “Yes,” he said, “to get his attention. I thought he would take me back in and tell me he loved me, and we could continue being lovers.”

“I just don’t see how a man twenty or thirty years older than you can be that attached to you, physically or emotionally.”

Baxster stood up then, moving away from the vehicle. He looked off down the street, shook his head sadly, and said, “Sorry, Logan, I don’t think someone like you would ever understand.”

He walked toward the house.
